Its 3 major resorts are Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios on the north of the isle, its capital, the home of reggae, Kingston sits on the south ease coast , whilst the unspoilt, un commercialised, un touristy south remains quintessentially the real Jamaica. On this trip to access golf TSG stayed at Sandals Royal Plantation in Ocho because it has its own golf course and is only 60 mins from the best golf on the island at Montego Bay. its also 4km from arguably the islands most famous attraction Dunes Falls. We also had a week down at Treasure Beach on the South coast to help experience the whole of this island paradise.

We commenced our vacation on the south of the island at Treasure Beach, staying at the splendid boutique hotel LASHINGS. This is a splendid hotel overlooking the Caribbean sea. A wonderful infinite pool, great lively bar, it truly was a fantastic base for exploring the unspoilt southern side of the island. We did a trip up the Black river and got close to the crocodiles. The beaches are totally unspoilt, great to see the little fishing boats land their catch and sell them on the beach.

Nice Fresh dishes daily, great cocktails, whats not too like, the people were so friendly, a fabulous relaxing week in paradise without the silly prices that normally accompany such decadence.

From here we moved to Ocho Rios to sample the delights of Sandals and again encountered great Jamaican hospitality. A must visit to the falls, whilst spectacular and enjoyable was a tad disappointing in a complete lack of regard for any individual with disabilities. You can try the famous Bob Sleigh ride and here play golf. Sandals Royal Plantation, a butler only resort was quieter than the resorts we had visited in Barbados and St Lucia but did offer free bus transport to its neighbouring facilities which were much more lively. The Golf Course, golf is free for Sandals guests, was well designed and despite the covid issues was well maintained. It certainly offered quite a fair challenge. Its off the coast so do not be expecting sea views it is a true parkland course, just sadly does not offer any woo factor. For this head to Montego Bay and its courses. All on the coast with spectacular vistas... certainly Montego would be more preferred choice if Golf was the primary goal for your vacation.

Cinnamon Golf, Montego Bay

Half Moon Bay , Montego Bay

Sandals Ocho Rios

In conclusion, Jamaica is quite stunning, its certainly a destination i am delighted we visited. Golf courses in this area, initially started to being noted and renowned as 2the Turkish Golf Riviera" in the late 60s and early 70s, the development of Antalya International airport, just 30 mins from most resorts and the rise of the budget airlines as firmly established this destination as a Golfing mecca for the Millennium.

The destination boasts miles and miles of golden sand beaches, calm azure seas and glorious year round sunshine. A rugged coastline and stunning views of the magnificent Taurus mountains offer a
dramatic contrasting sensational vista. hotels are numerous along this coast, the majority 5 star and All Inclusive, many with their own golf courses attached to the resort. They seem all to have been designed and developed with a quality and style commensurate to the location. We stayed at Sueno Golf and it was superb and amazing value for money.. Golf course development and construction has been carefully planned as to integrate into the location. Many noted and Internationally renowned architects have been utilised here. Indeed the standard is very much on a par with both the Costa del Sol and the Algarve.
Antalya harbour with its narrow alleyways with ancient roman walls is particularly picturesque. Boutiques, bazaars, restaurants bars and cafes await, a middle east environment with a Mediterranean vibe offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy some quality serenity whilst enjoying the local ambience.
Just outside Antalya are two exceptional historic Roman and Greek sites, Aspendos and Perge, no visit here is complete without a visit here o see the stadium and temples , over two thousand years
old. The coast and mountains offer some rugged sensational lPERGEooking waterfalls, it is an area of particular natural beauty. It woud be a mistake just to come here and Golf.
This is in my opinion one of the most spectacular course in the Canaries and indeed Spain. The 18 hole Arizona styled Championship Course is surounded by a quite magnificent rocky valley, giving several sensational vistas. The lush vegetation, palm trees and many varieties of cactus plants, lakes and waterfalls create quite a stunning backdrop that makes each hole particularly unique. Each hole as numerous tees and this allows for an attractive game for all levels. Anfi Taro Golf certainly exhilarated and captivated TSG.
Although it only has two courses and indeed one Cedar Valley of considerable note. Jolly Beach whilst a splendid location is a much more Executive, Pitch and Putt type of Course... However with 365 beaches, visit one each day..... glorious sunshine, friendly locals, fantastic food and raucous rum punch it more than covers this Golfers idea of a fantastic Winter Destination.... sensational sunsets and a vistas abound. A fantastic parkland course ROYAL MALTA

With its location 30 miles south of Sicily and 50 miles East of Tunisia, it definitely fits the bill in respect of a sunny pleasant majority of the year destination. The rain in Malta falls very sparingly, from June to August temperatures can get exceedingly high, but March, April and May offer a much more pleasant heat to visit, enjoy the sites and of course golf.

Phoenician heritage with Roman, Norman, Ottaman even Napoleonic make this place a true Cradle of History. Then add The Great Sieges of 1585 and WW2..... No matter where you turn there is something of note. A few splendid beaches and gorgeous fishing villages and the Isle of Gozo, really do mark this out as a special place. the capital Valletta is sensational.... Great Bars and Restaurants complete a Social Golfers idea of paradise.
Then the Golf, Royal Malta a course established in 1888 is a true parkland Test..... easy walks between holes, narrow tree lined fairways, fine conditioning, pleasant location. a few truly sensational and different holes... but its greens are its highlight and most formidable defence... All raised, well bunkered, now extremely settled over the years with subtle inclination and speed changes... no putt is a Gimme here. I throughly enjoyed my round... Friendly membership, fine practice facilities, great clubhouse, nice well equipped pro shop, great bar and restaurant.... top hire clubs too... All in all a great day.Ian Halliwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06585670660213323854noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-229596019461829728.post-87812263296553184152017-02-23T04:45:00.001-08:002017-02-23T04:45:21.425-08:00OH WHERE GOING TO BARBADOS

BARBADOS is certainly not renowned for its Golf it has only 4 major course, however it is certainly a gorgeous Island, fantastic people, a true PARTY Islland, great for A Social Golfing Break with the Mrs.

THE GOLF

IN truth, you wouldnt ever just visit this sensational island just for the golf. Theres only two easily accessible for play courses, yet it does have the Caribbeans top rated course... if you are fortunate enough and wealthy enough to get a round. Sandy Lane is the regions most prestigious address... residents include Roman Abramovich, Simon Cowell, Oprah Rihanna, Cliff Richard etc.. etc...
There are 3 golf courses and the flagship GREEN MONKEY. This 18hole 7400 yard is truly fitting of such opulence, but unless you are a mate of the above the liklihood is that if you can even get a round it will cost you $1,000 The resort hosts two other course, the Fazio designed Country Club Course, with its open fairways and five lakes and many risk and reward shots. The original course, established over 40 years ago is the OLD NINE COURSE and has just 9 holes. These courses whilst more accessable are still pricey and in my opinion both APES HILL and ROYAL WESTMORELAND offer better value for money. Apes Hill is a course set in lush pasture land and coral stoned quarries and sparkling lakes. There are several absolutely sensational vistas over the Caribbean sea. This has been acknowledged as one of the regions rising stars. The ROYAL WESTMORELAND is a members only club but does offer public tee times. The Robert Trent Jones Design is a proper Championship test that has regularly hosted European Senior Tr Events.
Ron Kirby designed BARBADOS Golf Club offers exceptional value at about $100 because it has partner deals with most hotel chains and an exceptional hire club service. TSG had a great round here on my visit. The greens have recently been relaid, they were exceptional. interesting and challenging, would be my first port of call on the island. ALMOND BEACH VILLAGE has a 9 hole par 3 course, more for guest hotel relaxation than a challenge for dedicated golfers. Finally on the South COAST is ROCKLEY Golf Club. A Par 70 course of just over 5600 yards which never the less offers an interesting challenge and is quite well maintained.
So it was with our visit to the historic hillside town of Antequera, a rural retreat in the Andalucian hillside about 35 miles north of Malaga. My good friend Rodrigo Villegas had been involved in the design and promotion of the course and two hotels in the region and he had often asked me to visit and profer my professional opinion. So for my birthday in April 2016 and to escape the miserable UK weather it was a great opportunity to view a course and a region , I had never before visited.
TSG ofcourse expects a certain standard and its on this criteria that I write and form an opinion. With regard to the GOLF, I am looking for a well maintained, interesting design with stunning vistas. This was certainly the case at the ANTEQUERA GOLF COURSE. In respect of the accomodation, I look for a range of budget options but at the 5 star level, our expectations include, great location, great facilities, outstanding food. Again at the CONVENTO DE MAGDALENE, we where not to be disappointed. Finally as it is a Social outing, the area has to offer somethng special too. A hat trick, ANTEQUERA TOWN did not let us down.

Flights to Malaga are so easy from the UK from most airports in the UK, Very reasonable prices can be found by comparing the respective budget airlines, particularly, Monarch and Easy Jet. We flew Easy jet from Newcastle for less than £70 return. However if we had to take our clubs that would have added over £60 to the flights. It was cheaper therefore to use the facilities of www.blueskygolf-rental.com for just £40 , I hand picked a set of clubs that where waiting for me at the hotel on arrival and would be collected after our departure. Iwas very happy with the quality of the equipment. If I am in a competition like the JR CLASSIC, I would want my own clubs but playing socially, these more than fit the bill. A cash saving, ease of travel, no discernable issues at all with the clubs, I recomend this company and will use again, as we will www.malagatransfer.co.uk who collected us at the airport and took us to the hotel, efficiently and on schedule.

So to the hotel, situated atop of a hill about 8km from Antequera town is the magnificent Convento de Magdalene. The approach is spectacular, the hotel, imposing and attractive. The staff were professional and attentive, the facilities and spa befitting a 5 star establishment but in my humble opinion the rooms were as good as I have been on any golf trip. The food was quite simply awesome. Wine list extensive as you would expect in Spain.... the place is the Bees Knees.. A more budget option that might favour a party of guys, as opposed to, as we were couples,, would be the HOTEL ANTEQUERA GOLF situated in the town itself. Despite our hotel being out of town and away from the couse, taxis are readily available, the charges reasonable at 15 Euro into the centre of the town.
The course is very testing. You need to drive long and certainly very straight to set up opportunities to attack the Greens. This part of the job TSG did quite well. there is substantial water on many approaches and to give birdie opportunities you needed a high ball flight to get close... this as you may be aware is not my strength and despite an improvement on day 2, I simply never got close enough regularly.
A special yearThe year has been somewhat changed from my normal schedule, I played on tour in January at the majestic Eagle Creek and had hoped to return in April to play at celebration, Disney and defend at Fox Hollow. Karen sadly contracted pneumonia whilst in the states in January and I felt unable to head back to Florida whist she was recovering. Pleased to say she his now well and back on her feet.

So as of May bank holiday, I have just played in two events.... Both successful. In a British Inclusive Golf event, Team TSG dismantled the field to clean up with 93 points. At Carus Green, I played inane SDGP event and won the top 20 order of merit points available with a net four under score.

In June, I am heading up to the renowned Roxbrughe course in the borders representing BIG against the SDGP in a Ryder Cup style event. August see the best at Nailcote, the British Par 3. Can Team TSG make it four in a row. Can TSG add to my five titles.

Then I head of to Mesquite, Vegas, Neveda to represent the Rest of the World against the USA in the Phoenix cup, returning to Florida to play in a Golf a Channel Event before returning to the Uk for the anticipated births of my new three grandchildren.... Golf n kids. Luv it... Luv life.
In fairness lack of playing opportunities in the UK left me totally under cooked and prepared having only arrived in the States three days before the event due to Easter. I played solidly on the first day at the Panther Course and indeed on the second and final day at the Crooked Cat had put myself into contention. A couple of holes proved costly and I had to reluctantly accept 5th probably an accurate reflection of my form.
I practiced relentlely the next week, playing highlands reserve, championsgate national, grand cypress and providence, so there were no excuses, nor did I need any as I came back from one behind at the turn to clinch a two shot victory in searing temperatures, my game was red hot.

Now Chris has just paid £1500 for an empty Box, I kid you not... This £ 1500 was assured to the Stroke Association without even knowing it would contain the Max Lacroix watch I had won at The Facebook Open.

Many Thanks Chris, hope to see it on TV one day.

In a few hours time, The USA will complete a clynical, comprehensive thourhghly deserved victory at magnificent Medinah. indeed only the size of the battering remains in doubt as the Europeans have only pride and in some cases faltering reputations to play for. It seems ridiculous to consider that in this walloping Tiger has been pointless.

Two year ago, capt Faldo was pilloried after what on reflection can now be considered quite a valiant performance at valhalla and I sense the knives are now out for Jose in a similar vein. I find this quite incredulous in a contest so flagrently in favour of the host side. consider the USAs disasterous record in the past two decades when crossing the pond, Europe have by comparison been very succesful. With the dice so loaded to the home teams advantage any Home Captain worth his salt should deliver. Doctoring the course, picking wildcards in form and the USA have 4 of these to Europes two. Picking pairs who work and make the home crowd raucous and boisterous to an often unacceptable degree, then its no wonder its been such a calamatous defence by the Europeans. It has remained a riveting spectacle and it has to be acknowledged produced some sensational golf of the highest quality albeit mainly by the USA. am I alone however in finding the football crowd antics and behaviour , unacceptable and out of place in any golf contest. be were you dont reap what you so. If chicago can do this and its acceptable, then what about 30,000 Scots at Gleneagles in 2014 when hogmany comes early. It wont be long till some poor protaganist has a 6 foot putt aka Langer at Kiawah and on his putting stroke is greeter with a chourus of boos. If thers any justice it will happen to the guys who have positively whipped upp this level of hysteria, maybe Bubba, Bradley or even Poults. We need to get back to basic concepts, Golf is a sport were the cheering starts when the ball has stopped moving and theres no place for the support, laughter , encouragement of failure.

At Gleneagles, the Rough is likely to be like a Jungle, the greens slow, weather wet and windy. The captain may, although unlikely have more impact on selection and then the drunken scots hoards could play there part. WELCOME TO THE HIGHLANDS Team USA.

Anyway the BRITS wont capitulate for long, TSG of to Florida to play in the Florida Open and the WORLD WOODS golf channell event, beware USA, the fightback Begins here!!!!Ian Halliwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06585670660213323854noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-229596019461829728.post-49967346057460782692012-08-24T10:10:00.001-07:002012-08-24T10:10:32.287-07:00Sensational SummerWhat really can you say, Facebook open champion, Facebook pairs champion, British Par 3 Team champions once again. Followed up with a 3rd position in the g tour qualifier at Moor Allerton which all but ensures a semi final berth at Belton Woods and keeps the qualifying final at Aphrodite Hills in Cyprus very much in focus. July and August very much saw TSG reach an unprecedented level of success and all this at a time we were moving to theYorkshire Dales..... Oh. Happy heady days.
Great Times at st.Andrews

In July, Karen and I with our good friends roger (Peg) and his wife Chris ( cheeky Chablis) headed up to St.Andrews to play in the inaugural Facebook Community Open a three day comp over the dukes, Torrance and kittocks courses. Superbly organised by local entrepreneur and Yorkshire lad Steve Cooke who with his family have to be wholeheartedly pris and thanked for making this event so memorable. A you now know, Tsg pretty cleaned up but this event was so much more than golf withcompetitorsfrom all over Europe, Australia and the good ole US of A....

With Robbie Harrison and Peter Harewood.... GREAT GUYS!!!

It had a truly cosmopolitan and international feel and the new friendships forged and made are far more important than the golfing titles. Day 1 at the dukes our four all with Robbie and the mercurial Peter Harewood who sprayed the all everywhere but with style, grace And a smile was a great day for means peg. Our golf was ok without being dynamic....

We struggled at times but fought for every point. I scored 34, peg 31 and we led the team event and was 2nd and 5th respectively in the individual.. Moving to the Fairmont to playitstwo ourse day 2 saw peg struggle a touch, I peppered the flag relentlessly but couldn't translate into birdies. We still led the team, I with 34 again, third in the individual, three adrift. The last day at the kittocks and whilst I didn't play as well really as I had at the Torrance the day before. Two birdies, a nearest to the pin and a Third day without a blob saw me compile a 39 top score on the day. Particular praise to a very sore Roger who despite bringing considerable pain and discomfort, bravely soldiered on to compile a score which ensured a comfortable team victory.
Heading south to the magnificent, stately Nailcote Hall and the annual British Par 3 extravaganza. The team event saw peg and I joined up with skitty our celeb was the Big Break winner Mark Murphy. A fine young man who played exceptional golf all week. In the team event we were imperious and at 16 under clear winners for a second year. Whilst the 3 amateurs all chipped in.... Mark was the star of the occasion.we were joined by gorgeous Eye Candy caddie, Rebecca Keen who brought much needed glamour to our colourful team.
The winning TSG defending Champions

In the main comp I was paired with Mr Trilby , 2008 winner Steve Cowle, once gain we had a great time but frankly never threatened to pull of a victory in the event for my cup THE HALLIWELL Cup, congrats to James Graham who I played with in 2010 when I won the event, clearly he learned something. The week culminated in the final team event when I joined the Nailcote Hall select team featuring great mate and trick shot star David Edwards and fine veteran Maurice Bembridge. Another first place to end in my opinion the best ever BP3. Thanks to Rick and Sue from Nailcote. Rick the course gets better. John and the Champions team.. U r all stars..... Many thanks.
My first event at a windy Redtail introduced me to a guy I was to become particularly friendly with on Tour, David Bulger. I put up quite a decent performance considering I was only 48 hours of the plane. In the end a couple of holes were to prove costly, particularly a out of bounds drive on the 4th, after a wicked bounce of the cartpath. A solid back nine ensured a top 5 position and my first points on the Golf Channel Tour.
Magnificent palm Disney, were Luke Donald clinched the US Money List.

The following weekend saw the first Major a two dayer at Disney Palm and Magnolia, the same set up that hosts the PGA Miracle Clasic, so famously won by Luke Donald in 2011. I played much better here over both days, finishing 4th, just 4 shots off the win. A disaterous snowman (eight) at Magnolias shortest hole the 3rd, effectively costing me the title. I actually hit the 135 yard green and rolled of the back behind a tree, then made so many wrong choices. However more points accrued.
Osprtey Ridge another Disney Classic

From here bouyed my improved play, i headed off to another Disney Course, were I finished second by one shot at the fabulous Osprey Ridge. Annoyingly I missed a Tiddler on eighteen which would have forced a play off. Getting closer and more points.

I then crossed over to the Golfweek Tour, were I had toe weekends to try and facilitate a return to Hilton Head for the US Nationals having qualified in 2009 and 2010 finishing both times in the top thirty . It was an opportunity to meet up with my great mate James Rearden. Lake Jovita North and South Courses, in Dade City, North of Tampa hosted The Tampa Tours first major. James and I are usually ultra competitive but this weekend, neither of us could handle the rock hard unbelievably quick, James had a good Sunday which propelled him to a close 3rd. Sadly I was a quite distant 4th. Southern \Dunes Haines City

The following weekend, the Golfweek Tour returned to Southern Dunes, the scene of my Big major win in 2009. I was paired with James and Dana Turgeon, great Hilton hEad mates, so a fun round was assured. James played quite superb, blowing us all away on the front nine but after the turn, I became a par and birdie macine, climbing the leaderboard. The heat was horrendous, the round took 6 and half hours. I certainly think this cost James the title, he finished runner up. I hung on in their for another top 5 finish.

Final hole Watson Course at the Magnificent Reunion Complex.

Reunion is the closest course to my home in Florida, it features three exceptional courses designed by Watson, Palmer and Nicklaus. I had played the icklaus with great supporter of Disabilities golf David Windsor but had not touched base on the others despite driving past many times over the years. Everything went well and quite simply I was sublime in my course management. Hitting and splitting every fairway to give me my victory by 4 shots over great guy David Bulger, fresh of his win at Grand Cypress the week before.

I also this trip got opportunity to play with my Toys for Tots Winning Scrambe partner Scott Ramey and fellow Brit Mark. The round at Providence proving pivotal in my victory in the final Tour Event at Watson. On a difficult day, hard course, i compiled 36 points, level par, which put me in confident mood for my Floridian swansong. Equally my day at Reunion with Dave playing with a respected PGA Teacher also was key to my success. Finally, it would be remiss not to thank European PGA Legend and very close friend Mark Mouland who styed with me early in the trip whilst on the Champions Tour. Particularly his insight into the Sunday at the Masters will never be forgotte. Thanks to you all GUYS.
Fortunately after several close finishes, victory in my last tour event at reunion, a fitting reward I think for the hard work I have put in. 5th at Redtail, 4th in the Disney masters, 2nd at Osprey Ridge....also 4th at lake jovita and 5th at Southern Dunes.. Today's thought..... Never stop believing, work hard, accept the bad bounces, make the good ones count..Sometimes you just need to keep going to the well. I have like most golfers been enthralled as and when the top list of courses is published by such luminaries as Golf Digest and Golf World..... A combination of votes cast by the chosen select few. I have now played over 1000 courses world wide, left a divot on every continent and a ball in every ocean so whilst on nobodies list of select invitees, I do believe my top ten as having validity in that I have played each and every one of these courses. equally my list is done on one over riding premise..... the enjoyment factor.... not how hard, how many majors the course has held..who designed it but... SIMPLY WHICH DID I ENJOY PLAYING THE MOST. My enjoyment basis is computable by a triumvirate of considerations.......... firstly value for money secondly beauty of the course and location...finally .. the course as a golf challenge..

Number one by a country mile.... Two autonomous quality course the East and the West that for competitions such as the Presidents Cup become one the COMPOSITE taking 12 from the west and 6 from the East. this should not intimate that the East is the weaker course... this amalgamation was done simply as a beneficial expedient initially in 1959 for the Canada Cup... now The World Cup to simply avoid the busy roads that cross both courses and facilitate easier logistics for spectators. these courses are simply one of the most fantastic designs on the planet, Something outstanding and exceptional really was inevitable given that many of the earliest members had their origins in St.Andrews and the outstanding natural terrain of the course was so similar the Scottish links dune land. Given the principal architect was the Peerless Dr Alister Mackenzie, Cypress Point and Augusta National would follow for this doyen of he Inter War period. backed up by Alex Russell and Green keeper Claude Crockford.... the 3 wise men produced two masterpieces. When I played besides the outstanding design... in the first book I comment principally on the Greens, definitely the best I have encountered.. Ernie Eels ( 2002) you wont putt on better greens than these all year"... and the Bunkers.... and I found plenty with the strategic placing and careful design.... yet I just were not bothered so enjoyable the contest of man against nature is on this course. it is a 1920's design and does need lengthening.... difficult in view of the original design... but i will watch the 2012 Cup with interest.. they were trying to make it Tiger proof when i visited.... how times change. Today the Emirates may not be considered by some pundits the best even in Dubai, with the Els, Montgomeries, The creek et al exceptional courses.... but when I visited Dubai, I only wanted to play, the original, the one, the iconic Emirates with two equally exceptional tracks. How you can consider building this Course in these conditions in the Desert is a modern day wonder now often replicated across the middle east..... but this the first real Desert course may have been imitated but rarely I believe bettered. again pricey but then everything in Dubai is..... reviewed in The Living the Dream book.
again, I doubt this would appear in any classics listing, but this place is special to me. Allow a bit of indulgence, its where I played my first ever overseas round... won my first ever overseas competition, so the memories are rather special. Tunisia is in my mind a very much neglected golfing oasis on the African med.... the courses are well maintained, superbly designed and compared with the rest of the med, unbelievable value for money often less than £20 per round. golf in the sun don't get any better.
once again this may not be considered the best in these islands of nine or ten very special courses. Home of the British Par 3 Championship, this 9 hole course gets in because it is that good as a stand alone challenge. I do not know any of my peers who have not loved this place, its intricate pin placements, its natural beauty.... in my opinion the number one soc golf competition in the world. Tony Jacklin said it were like playing a major championship around a country manor when a tea party was on. Maybe, different and certainly unique but as the professional scores reflect a considerable challenge.
I enjoy the thrill of an against nature and its elements... "I always smell the Roses" ( Ben Hogan ), I simply find golf courses beautiful creations.....

I play GOLF because it is good for both my soul and health. After my tumour in 96 and stroke in 06, golf has always been a major catalyst for my ongoing recovery. "There are no bad rounds of Golf save that last one we will ever play" Bernard Hunt.

I play Golf because of the camaraderie and friendships that I have formed over many years. In no other walk of my life have these acquaintances often formed so briefly over just a simple round, lasted and endured and given me some much joy and often comfort.

I play Golf because it makes me HAPPY. "Happy Golf is Good Golf, even the best Golf, so we are all capable of playing good golf and playing our best." Gary Player.

That is why annually I travel over 6000 miles to play in The Florida Open for Golfers with Disabilities. This year saw my fourth visit and I am a proud ex champ having clinched the prestigious title in 2009 at Kissimmee Bay Golf Club.... but although I certainly went with the desired aim of recapturing the coveted title, the event was far more than just a competition to me. it was an annual opportunity to renew friendships, discuss well being and simply enjoy the company of some of the friendliest, nicest, bravest people I have ever met. It was this competition and watching the impressive ways that amputees, brain injured survivors etc., dealt and coped with their difficulties, overcame them thru fortitude, technology, cussedness and a total love of life and the game, that led me back home in the Uk to devote The Social Golfer concept to actively promoting the cause of Disabilities Golf and now becoming actively involved in the UK. So in many ways returning to Florida is a homecoming to my rebirth as a golfer... it remains the only competition I will annually commit too, it is that important to me and quite frankly, that enjoyable.

Brew in action

The competition for it is still despite my procrastinations above, primarily a golf competition was played out this year at Long Marsh Golf Club, Rotunda just south of Venice on the Gulf Coast. Once again I was paired with my great friend and mucker Charles Brugh. (Brew) His story needs little introduction to most TSGers but save to say how this guy is alive and playing golf is in itself the biggest achievement I personally have ever come across. It was great to see again defending champ Steve Shipeleski a fine guy and great one handed golfer.. he was the man to beat I was sure. The past two years rounds with brew lasted 6 to 7 hours such was the difficulties he endures to play this most beautiful of games. This year we went round in just over 5 hours testament to his ongoing improvement and recovery, a lot of which he puts down to golf. He scored 113 had a super par5 on the 14th and played 14 thru 17 at just 3 over. This for me was the highlight of the entire day as his No 1 English caddy encouraged and motivated his mucker to play the golf of his life. Every round with thi guy i spiritually uplifting and fulfilling. Playing of fwd tees a course of just over 5000 yards obviously made it much easier for me. I discussed with the pro my handicap and agreed to reduce it to 7 for this competition. There was a net category as well as the Gross. I shot 73, bogeying miserably the last.. a costly error. I had beaten Steve he shot 76 off ten we led the net as well with 66, so my reduced handicap proved to be a fair one. My Gross Score led until the last fourball, when a superb one under 71 was declared..... was I disappointed, yes, but the winners story equally as enthralling,an ex air force serviceman, injured playing American football I believe, had actually designed a caliper to assist his golf having never played up to 6 years ago he his know a single digit player and this is now available for many suffering similar joint problems. He certainly deserved the title and is a very worthy champion. A super buffet followed courtesy of the club and then the presentations and awards were made. here Dave and Joe make the day so special involving all the participants, so you become truly aware of every ones difficulties and life changing stories and of course the considerable work done by so many organisations to help golfers with difficulties. I won a King Cobra Driver but having snapped my Ping G10 and replacing it already by a new G15 on this trip, I got great pleasure donating it to a local Veterans Golf Day for a prize in their February event which I will commitments not withstanding try to get over to play.

Uplifted, fulfilled I had played VERY HAPPY GOLF, been reasonably successful and helped my mucker continue his golfing adventure. Mr Joe Styne now a noted author himself, said some very complimentary about me , I very nearly blushed. I certainly hope some of my Uk chums hopefully PegLeg Roger for sure, the new EDGA Rapello in Italy Champion may join me in 2012.

A special Thanks of course to Joe and Florida Golf Magazine for sponsoring the event again.... Dave at the Adaptive Sports Golf for his organisation, support and encouragement. Long Marsh Golf Club for putting on a wonderful event. The course was in superb condition, Greens wonderful, design stunning, I will return. the Staff from Catering, Pro Shop thru Green Staff etc., all deserve extra commendation for the patient, pleasant often humorous way the dealt with 40 golfers not of the norm!!.

But principally, I thank my fellow competitors who are the real reason for the success of this competition. A Joy to be with, a pleasure to play with, I am proud to be associated with you all.

Keep playing HAPPY GOLF

Finally though to Brew, my confidante, mentor.... we will break 100 next year..... 2016 Olmpics remains our joint goal.... and if anyone can.... you can.... Fear of failure does not worry us, not reaching our potential certainly Does...

I could simply eulagise about this competition all day long...... Laughter permitates round the course from holes one to eighteen as golfers despite their respective difficulties and disadvantages show an unbridalled passion and enthusiasm for this pastime I so love. Each encouraging each other over every shot, celebrating the good ones, commiserating the not so good.

So a gamut of emotions, Disappointment I didnt win, tempered by the Excitement of participation, Joy at renewal of friendships.... Thrill of playing such a beautiful course.

Roll on 2012.

Ian Halliwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06585670660213323854noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-229596019461829728.post-23774457771107492842011-09-18T09:25:00.000-07:002011-09-18T11:07:57.746-07:00Success, Disappointment but plenty of Satisfaction
The Chuckle Brothers or the Blues Brothers, TSG and Peg at the BP3 before tiredness set in.

The winning TSG Team

August and September was always going to be the business end of the season, starting with the British Par 3, culminating with the final chance to book a trip to Cyprus on the G Tour, inter sped with my first visit to he British Disabled Open and the prestigious PEOPLES OPEN at Royal St Georges not to mention Team TSGs defence of The Frank Worthington Celebrity Team Event.

Presenting The HALLIWELL CUP

Plenty of opportunity for silverwear but a very tiring schedule as I would soon find out. Since my stroke I have in my mind rolled back the years, certainly playing better golf and felt quite fit, this schedule proved to me I certainly should not neglect what my body was telling me, too much golf and more importantly travelling was definitely having an impact on my well being and Golf an this was not just me TSG stalwart Peg Leg Roger has suffered similarly. th rigours of the 8 days in Scotland whilst so enjoyable are however still as we approach my return to Florida having an impact on my fitness, stamina levels. A much more streamlined summer is planned next year according to matron.

Anyway first he great news. Team TSG triumphed in the Celebrity Team Event at The British Par 3 at the fantastic Nailcote Hall. Skitty, Peg and I were joined by racing legend Bob Champion an appropriate choice giving his illness scares as well. we were quite simply superb as was seen on Sky Sports were we received superb coverage I am delighted to say. 18 under and a massive 6 shot cushion did in no way flatter us. A second British Championship Title for TSG right proud I was Too. Sadly my defence of the Pro am title with Cameron Clark was not to be successful the rails really coming off on day 2 when still in contention. My ball up the tree on the 9th not helping. Over 50mph wind, torrential rain, really ruined the experience. I never saw a putt hit were the ball was not moving and in on instant a playing partner hit a quite exquisite 20 foot bunker shot to 8 inches only to find after raking the bunker the ball had blown back into said bunker. On he 15th I was faced with a 100yard bunker shot, from a decent lie I hit an 8 iron flush it flew straight up and towards the green, then the wind blew it back some 30 yards over my head. It was simply attrition as players walked in. I am pleased to say I completed all 18 holes, totalled a meagre 21points but finished 5th out of 60 golfers and leading Senior. It was memorable sadly for all the wrong reasons.

Proud to play at Darrens Place

Back on the road again Team TSG headed back to West Midlands golf course for my good friend Frank Worthingtons celeb event. Despite poor Greens, wind, well a little squall after St.Georges our Team overcame a dire turn to all contribute on 7 and 18 which gave us a victory by just 3 points. Pegs Birdie on 18th and Steves par following mine and Kennys pars at 17 proving vital. It really was a team performance as opposed to fantastic golf.

Another spanked down the middle.

So to my 8th consecutive weekend away, the G Tour event at Mottram Hall. Situation here clear, I should already have done enough to be in top 50 for National finals at Belton Wood ( were I won Bunkerfest ) you may recall. I am lying 17th in the Order of Merit, but you can never be sure... More importantly I am lying second in The Birdie Tier and a top 5 place could put pressure on the leader. The weather was again not friendly, the course penal, particularly he rough but I drive imperiously, quite sublime splitting the fairways shot after shot and despite the odd hiccup, play Par Golf and compile 34 points, I realise his is good score because in my fourball, the scores are 21, 22 and 15. My tally sadly finishes one shot short but I am delighted, this second place will catapult me into the top 5 on The Order of Merit and will give me the title in The Birdie Tier. a fine end to my debut on this highly competitive, totally enjoyable, superbly organised tour. A top ten place in the finals and its of to Cyprus in January. I am very confident.

and So.............Its back to Florida. I am playing in two competitions over there. firstly at Championsgate, I am playing in The Golfweek Tampa Bay Tours Major in early October then in the middle I try to regain The Florida Open in Sarasota. also plenty of practice so I'm really raring to go at BELTON.

Remember........... I hated this hole. The back 9 , the older established course was a far more enticing prospect.... wider fairways, more bailouts, flatter greens and this is where everyone seemed to prosper. In days one and two to back nines of over twenty points gave me a 3 shot lead going into the final round. Sadly Playing first out, I probably concentrated on keeping young Adrian Canny at bay rather than compiling a winning score... in my defence I had some bad news overnight from back home with the bereavement of a friend.... my mind was not totally on the job in hand.... fair to say however with scores of 35 and 37 in rounds two.... Colin Brock 39, the deserved winner and Andy MacDonalds 39, the runner up... were worthy scores which even at my best would have proved difficult to match... 3rd place on my debut on this tour and a lovely crystal trophy was fair reward and I was well pleased with my form going into the world cup.

westerwood par 3 15th

(my birdie here in The Singles put paid to Scottish hopes)

with the world cup ( rear Peter Hodgkinson)

We then moved down the road to the splendid Westerwood Resort for a four day Ryder Cup Format... I offered to be paired with Team Englands totally Blind Gofer, Peter Hodgkinson who with his wife and guide Margaret formed an unlikely undefeated partnership of 2 wins and a half which helped propel England to 15 from 18 points and a healthy lead gone into the 12 match singles. The Scots gave us an almighty scare on the last day but Peter and I secured the two victories at the end to both remain unbeaten and an integral part of Team Englands world success. it was particularly memorable because of the magnificent hosting of the event by the SDGP and the camaraderie of the teams.
